Founder, TMG Custom Media
Astute. Accomplished. A true visionary. Committed. Content Pioneer. Warm. Generous.
There are not enough adjectives to describe this year’s Caldwell Award honoree. Jane Ottenberg founded TMG Custom Media with her partner Richard Creighton in 1981 with one client and one magazine, long before “custom content” became a popular term. Today TMG employs more than 100 people and serves more than 50 clients in its Washington, D.C. and New York City offices. Jane is the perfect example of someone motivated by passion, whose leadership has built and sustained a thriving company that continues to lead in the custom content space. TMG is recognized by its clients and competitors as one of the country’s top custom content agencies because of its outstanding quality, strongly measured results in digital, print and social media, and unusually long-term relationships. Most of the clients who worked with TMG during its first year of business are still clients today.
Jane has an incredible understanding of how content resonates, and she has an exceptional eye for design. Equally, what makes Jane successful is her love of people. Today, she continues to energize client, employee and personal meetings in a way that engages those all around her. Jane’s passion for quality has contributed to TMG winning more than 750 awards, including 110 Pearls. She is also an astute business woman, building financial returns for TMG’s clients and for the company itself. Even 30 years later, Jane never settles for what is; she’s always searching for what’s next.
Jane also reserves time for family and numerous charitable initiatives. She currently serves on the board of the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capitol Area Chapter. She also sat on the board of the Maret School in Washington D.C. and the Fred Abramson Scholarship Foundation that awards college scholarships to DC inner city high-school seniors. Additionally, Jane served on the board of the Custom Content Council for five years and TMG was one of the founding companies that joined when the organization was formed.
Last month Jane was inducted in SmartCEO’s Brava! Hall of Fame, asthe one leader chosen from last year’s class of 25 women CEOs. In 2009 she was named as one of min’s “21 Most Intriguing People in Media.”
Jane was the first presenter of the John Caldwell award. She knew John and held him in high esteem as a person and a professional. It is fitting and timely that she be recognized, and John would be proud and pleased to see her honored.
Congratulations Jane Ottenberg!
